Major points to the bookworms who remember this flick—I own it on VHS, thank you very much.
The Pagemaster (1994) renders the reader's figurative journey into new worlds as a literal adventure tale for the kiddies. Richard Tyler (Macaulay Culkin) is a ten-year-old pessimist who lives according to safety statistics and his own general fear of the unknown. After he's sent to purchase a bag of nails for his father's latest DIY project (he's building a treehouse for his son), Richard gets caught in a terrible storm and is forced to find sanctuary in the closest library. From there, the young boy is swept up into the animated and dangerous world of The Pagemaster (Christopher Lloyd). Richard must work through obstacles from classic literature to return to the real world, thereby vindicating all those lit-savvy kids in the stacks.
And how could anyone forget the moment when the ceiling mural melts and just about drowns our lil' protagonist, am I right?
